Methods of Communication Using the Internet
There are
many ways you can communicate with family, friends, and colleagues on the
internet. Communications via the internet have lead to a new global community. You
can talk to family in three different states/countries all at the same time.
The most common
internet communication is through email or electronic mail. This is an
electronic version of the traditional letter. It may contain videos, text,
images, and many other forms of media. Email has replaced a lot of letter
writing, phone calls, and even many face-to-face meetings. There are many email
providers: Gmail, AOL, Yahoo, etc.

Another
form of internet communication is social networking. Lifewire.com explains
social networking as being like starting at a new high school. When you first
begin, you don’t have many friends and you are not really a member of any clubs
or groups. You then meet new people and make new friends. You start to find
things that you have in common with some of them and you start hanging out with
them and going groups and clubs. This is the same with social networking. When you
first start out you have very few friends and are not a part of any of the
groups. As you go along you grow your friend’s list and join groups with
similar interest as you. The difference lies in that social networking takes
place online. There are many social networks: Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, Pinterest,
Twitter, etc.

Another
form of internet communication that is gaining in popularity is steaming media.
You can stream whether the media is live or not. Your media player, or the one embedded
in the media, downloads approximately 10 seconds of the video. You may see this
as buffering. While it plays this 10 seconds it is downloading the next 10
seconds. This way you do not have to download the whole file and take up that
space on your computer. Usually the media player will delete the last
downloaded information so that your memory on your computer or device is still
the same. Some people are streaming all their television shows and have
canceled their television services.

E-commerce and m-commerce
There are two
important ways in which to use the internet for purchasing things, e-commerce
and m-commerce. E-commerce, or electronic commerce, is what most of us think of
as online shopping or online banking from our home computers or laptops. The most
common shopping apps are Amazon and Walmart. You must be connected to the
internet. M-commerce, or mobile commerce, is an extension of e-commerce. M-commerce
takes place on mobile devices, for example: laptops, smart phones, tablets,
etc. It is easily mobile and convenient. It is not mandated that m-commerce use
the internet. It may use cellular or no service. M-commerce has a larger
potential market then e-commerce.
